CV advice.

With our extensive experience at Dickson Lewis, we will work with you to ensure your CV will give you the very best chance of landing the job. We have pulled together the following basic advice to assist you in making a start.

Think of your CV as a promotional sales tool. First impressions really count so you need to ensure that it stands out from the competition and portrays you in the best light possible.

There is no such thing as a perfect CV but follow good practice targeting it to the specific market sector or job, based on your research of the employers needs. One way of doing this is by using matched language to the job description you are applying for.

A CV must include achievement statements to demonstrate your effectiveness and future potential. Use action verbs when highlighting skills and achievements to make them descriptive e.g. determined, facilitated, completed, inspired etc.

CV Checklist:

    • Ensure you have included your Name and Contact Details.

    • Always include a ‘Personal Statement’ and adapt this to each employer – it is a great opportunity to sell yourself.

    • List your employment history in chronological order.

    • Use heading’s and job titles followed by bullet points to break down each role. This makes it easier to highlight key words for the person reading it.

    • If you have a gap in your CV give an explanation e.g. career break/ travelling etc.

    • Keep the information as brief as you can whilst highlighting your key information. Two pages is a good average for a CV.

    • Include any languages you speak and your proficiency in each e.g. basic or fluent.

    • Never claim things that are not true as they will always come back to haunt you!
